EspañolFinally launching after a two month delay, the federal health care (Obamacare) system’s Spanish website has been frustrating users across the United States. They report being redirected to forms in English, finding various grammatical mistakes, and experiencing an inefficient help-desk line.

Users say the majority of errors pertain to the Spanish language, translated from English via an automatic computer-generated process. These issues have undermined the government’s efforts to enroll Spanish-speaking prospects in the federal health care program.

Critics — including Veronica Plaza, a professor who teaches medical Spanish at the University of New Mexico — argue that these problems have chased away people who would have benefited greatly from the program. In the United States, 12 percent of the population speak at home. However, authorities claim that last month, less than 4 percent of help desk line calls came from Spanish-speakers. Officials say they are working to improve the website and are open to suggestions for fixing current issues.
