EspañolOn Tuesday, a Colombian court released a temporary order blocking the removal of Bogotá Mayor Gustavo Petro. The Inspector General’s Office decided last month to dismiss Petro — a former senator and guerrilla — for mismanagement and to bar him from holding any public post for 15 years.
Judge Jose Maria Armenta of the Administrative Tribunal for Cundinamarca province provided the injunction, after concluding that the Inspector General’s office violated Petro’s fundamental rights.
“Justice and [the will of the people] have won the battle over arbitrary power,” Petro stated after knowing the order. His supporters have protested in Bogotá since the inspector general announced his decision on December 9.
Petro presented his case before the court after the Inspector General’s Office denied his appeal. Now, President Juan Manuel Santos has discretion regarding with to proceed with the decision of the inspector general, but Judge Armenta has asked him to wait until the court’s final ruling.
