The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of Honduras announced today it will review the voting records of the presidential election held on November 24. The TSE has accepted the Partido Libertad y Refundación (LIBRE) demand for a review of the results of the past elections. Since last Wednesday, LIBRE has contested the electoral results, alleging electoral fraud, and has led large protests demanding an investigation.
After a meeting between the judges of the TSE, Xiomara Castro — LIBRE leader and presidential candidate — and the president of the TSE, David Matamoros, agreed to do the audit under one condition: Castro must accept the results of the audit and make a public declaration to that effect.
LIBRE’s request includes a recount of the 16,135 original records of the closing polls, with at least 200 participants from Castro’s party. She proclaimed herself the winner on the election day and has alleged that the vote was subject to manipulation, due to a vulnerable electoral system.
