EspañolIn less than two months, Venezuela’s Superior Council for the Popular Defense of the Economy has conducted, as of Tuesday, more than 1,500 inspections, according to Major General Heber Garcia Plaza. The organization, created in early October by the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, aims to enforce price controls and combat shortages of essential goods.
Inspections involved officials from various agencies such as the National Institute for the Defense of People’s Access to Goods and Services (Indepabis) and the Exchange Administration Commission (Cadivi). The umbrella organization is made up of various Venezuelan ministries, such as security forces and Bolivarian Militia representatives.
Most audited businesses were those selling basic products: textiles, footwear, appliances, and auto parts. According to inspection results, officials found irregularities across all shops, such as usura (price gouging).
The National Superintendent of Costs and Prices (Sundecop), who also participates in the inspections, has made phone numbers and his Twitter account available to the public for reporting these offenses.
