EspañolJosé Tulio Sánchez, mayor of the Concepción municipality in Copán province, escaped from a brutal attack this morning at 8 a.m. The incident occurred while he was away from home in the town of Dulce Nombre and traveling towards Santa Rosa, the capital of Copán. An unknown group of individuals intercepted his vehicle at Tierra Colorada village and opened with a rapid line of gunfire.
Sánchez did not suffer any injuries, but a two-month-old baby suffered mortal wounds. Her mother, Rosibel Urbina, was traveling in the vehicle with the mayor and is now in Hospital de Occidente in Santa Rosa, since she was also injured in the attack.
The police have announced that they are in pursuit of the attackers, and this comes one month after Sánchez shared concerns with them about politically-motivated threats to his life. They found AK-47 shells at the scene of crime.
