Addressing the nation on Thursday, US President Barrack Obama said he will allow US Americans to renew for one year any health care plans that don’t meet the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) stringent coverage standards. “I completely get how upsetting this can be for a lot of Americans, particularly after assurances they heard from me that if they had a plan they like, they can keep it,” he said during the White House press briefing. Instead, Obama said he’s leaving it up to state insurance commissioners as to whether non-compliant plans are canceled or not.
Supporters of the ACA are disillusioned by the change in policy. State insurance commissioners expressed their concerns throughout the country. William P. White, DC insurance commisioner, said “the action today undercuts the purpose of the exchanges . . . by creating exceptions that make it more difficult for them to operate.” Mike Kreidler, Washington state insurance commissioner, said he’ll reject the proposal and “will not be allowing insurance companies to extend their policies.”
