Tina Turner has filed paperwork to relinquish her US citizenship at the US Embassy in Bern, Switzerland. Turner, 73, has lived in the Zurich suburb of Kuesnacht, Switzerland, for over 20 years. She claims to no longer have ties in the United States, “except for family, and has no plans to reside in the United States in the future.”
While relinquishing is not the same process as renouncing citizenship, it achieves the same outcome and is one way to avoid US tax obligations, by becoming a naturalized citizen of another country. Turner became a Swiss citizen in April with the intent of losing her US citizenship, reports the Washington Post.
Expatriates relinquishing their nationality at US embassies surged this year, setting the pace for the highest desertion rate on record.
