On Tuesday, October 29, the United Nations held its 68th General Assembly and its 38th and 39th meetings. The topic of discussion at this gathering centered around the trade relationship between the United States and Cuba.

The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, said “The US policy against Cuba is suffering from an absolute international isolation and discredit and lacks every ethical or legal ground.” But US diplomat, Ronald Godard, responded by saying that the United States’ “sanctions policy toward Cuba is just one of the tools in [the] overall effort to urge respect for the civil and humans rights.”

The vote was nearly unanimous—188 to 2 (US and Israel)—in favor of the resolution that called for “an end to the United States’ decades-long economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba.”
