On Sunday, documents from Edward Snowden demonstrated that the National Security Administration has been spying on the email accounts of Mexico’s highest government ranks. That includes both former President Felipe Calderon and current President Enrique Peña Nieto — prior to him entering office.
That same day, the victims of the spying condemned it and called for a swift investigation, which President Barack Obama has promised.
“This practice is unacceptable, illegitimate and contrary to Mexican law and international law,” Mexico’s Foreign Ministry said. “In a relationship of neighbors and partners, there is no room for the kind of activities that allegedly took place.”
