According to Julian Assange, WikiLeaks founder, “ninety-eight percent of Latin American telecommunications to the rest of the world — that means SMS, phone, email, etc. — passes through the U.S.”
In an interview this past week, Assange stated that the US government is in a position to blackmail every important person in Latin America, as well as to predict the behavior of Latin American leaders and their interests. He believes this to be a threat to national sovereignty.
Edward Snowden, a former U.S. intelligence contractor, revealed that the US, indeed, spied on the presidents of Brazil and Mexico, as well as the Brazilian state oil company Petrobras.
