In Cuba, teachers who receive a salary are not allowed to charge for tutoring. However, even that restriction turns out to be progress, because up until 2010, tutoring for money was completely illegal. As a way to expand private work, “self-employed teachers” are now permitted to obtain a license to tutor — but salaried teachers are not permitted to obtain such a license.
According to sources provided by Granma, a Cuban Communist Party newspaper, 1,023 Cubans hold a license to tutor for money.
