The congressionally-mandated program, the free United States Diversity Visa Lottery, opened registration for DV-2015 on October 1, 2013, and will close November 2, 2013. The program has strict eligibility requirements and randomly draws from a pool of millions — 19.7 million in 2012 — to offer residence to 50,000 applicants every year.
Eligibility takes into account an individual’s country of origin, education, and work experience. Those who are from countries with relatively higher rates of immigration to United States are not eligible, including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Mexico, and Peru.
