Guatemala’s President Otto Pérez has announced a US$40 million donation from the US Government to increase the country’s capacity to fight drug trafficking. The statement came yesterday, during a special event at a Guatemalan Air Force base.
In addition to other equipment, the donation includes six helicopters and infrastructure for their use, valued at US$16 millon.
Pérez had asked for more US financial support in order to fight drug trafficking, and the US government answered — even if many in Guatemala’s government, including Pérez, support legalization of drugs rather than more violent confrontations.
