This September 4, Chilean judges — in their role as representatives of the nation’s judicial system — have presented an unprecedented apology in the name of their members from 1970 to 1990. They acknowledged that members at that time ignored their obligations towards Chile’s society after the military coup in 1973, which remains a sensitive and divisive issue for Chileans.
The dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet killed more than 3,000 people between 1973 and 1990. According to the magistrates association, however, most of those deaths could have been avoided had the Chilean judiciary safeguarded basic civil rights of the people being persecuted by the government.
