Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla has marched in protest over the claims of the Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega to regain the northwestern Costa Rican province of Guanacaste, annexed in 1842.
On Thursday at 10 a.m., cabinet ministers along with President Chinchilla and local participants walked from Nicoya province’s Court of Justice to San Blas Church to protest in its plaza.
Costa Rican Foreign Minister Enrique Castillo has closed the Costa Rican consulate in Managua, Nicaragua, and on August 14 filed a formal complaint against Ortega’s threat to recover the territory. The Nicaraguan President has said he will take the case to the International Court of Justice at the Hague.
President Chinchilla, in an interview with Fernando del Rincón from CNN en Español (in the video below), said that the Nicaraguan President had been historically hostile to Costa Rica. She noted the invasion of Isla Calero in 2011 and attempts to drill oil in Costa Rican maritime space since 2002.
Chinchilla mentioned that Ortega had jeopardized the peaceful coexistence of their nations and threatened the sovereignty of the territories at stake. There is also a generalized concern among Costa Rican authorities due to the increase of Russian weaponry bought by Nicaraguan government, since Chinchilla’s country does not have an army.
