A top German electronics firm announced this week the opening of a manufacturing and support services facility in Costa Rica.
Zollner Elektronik AG will invest approximately US$10 million for facilities and equipment for engineering services and electronic device manufacturing. Costa Rica’s Foreign Trade Ministry said Zollner’s operations will be located “in a free zone at the Metropolitan Area, that is yet to be defined.”
The investment in its initial phase is set to hire a team dedicated to its engineering, research, and development center — set to open in mid-2014 — as support to the company’s operation in California. By the end of next year, Zollner anticipates operations to begin at an electronics component manufacturing plant.
Overall, some 200 jobs are expected over the next three years. The chief executive officer for Zollner Costa Rica, Gene Lindberg, said “there will be many job opportunities for Costa Ricans in various administrative, technical, and manufacturing posts.”
Foreign Trade Minister Anabel González lauded Zollner’s move to Costa Rica as “a clear example of this administration[‘s] efforts to diversify foreign direct investment sources.”
Zollner Elektronik AG “is one of the top 15 global electronics manufacturing and engineering services companies, as well as the No. 1 in Germany,” emphasized Gabriela Llobet, executive director of the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency.
