Increased international travel to Latin America with American Airlines and regional line American Eagle is at risk from an antitrust lawsuit filed by the US Justice Department against AMR Corp., parent of both companies, blocking its merge with US Airways.
Despite a broader economic slowdown, American Airlines and Eagle Airlines have managed to record a rise of US$2.6 million on revenue passenger miles for Latin America in July, up from 2.3 million from the same month in 2012. Both airlines boarded at least 3 million passengers to Latin America during the past month, 11.5 percent more to the region than the same month a year ago.
