A United Nations report says that land in Colombia dedicated to the coca plant — the raw ingredient for cocaine — has dropped to its lowest level in over a decade.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said land under coca cultivation is at around a third of what it was in 2001, when it began monitoring land use.
Moreover, between the years 2011 and 2012, fields set aside for coca dropped 25 percent. BBC News reported that Colombian officials see these figures as proof that their anti-drug strategies have worked.
