President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has told the UN Security Council, “We don’t take a fanciful approach to the Malvinas,” using the Argentine title for the Falkland Islands.

Fernández de Kirchner called on the United Kingdom to “sit down and discuss” UN Resolution 2065, which in 1965 advocated that both countries proceed with negotiations.  She declared “This is a litigious and controversial issue. We need to find consensus and safeguard peace.”

Argentina’s president has chaired the meeting since the country took the helm of the council this month.
