Mexico approved an educational reform that has provoked tension within the government due to its interference in parental authority. Now, the parents have a legislator on their side, Elsa Mendez Alvarez, the president of the Family Commission in the 59th Legislature, affirms that the reform, in fact, consists of indoctrination on sexual topics “without scientific evidence.”
During the presidential campaign of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the opposition insisted on drawing parallels between him and Hugo Chavez. What few know is that this was precisely the topic that sparked the first civil movement against Chavez and paved the way for the subsequent movements.
In October 2000, Hugo Chavez issue Decree 1011. It was a presidential decree. The text of the decree partially modified the Regulations for the Practice of the Teaching Profession, by creating a new administrative figure: itinerant supervisions.
Thus, a movement of parents arose. They asked the state and the ruling party to not interfere in the education of their children.
Now, in Mexico, parents have organized under the slogan, “Don’t mess with my children,” along with several representatives of civil associations. Legislator Elsa Alvarez Mendez gave a press conference in which she warned of the possible consequences of the educational reform promoted by Education Secretary Esteban Moctezuma.
“Education will be based on the gender ideology on the pretext of promoting equality and rights for the benefit of girls and boys. It will, instead, disconnect the three dimensions of sexuality: biological, psychological, and social,” she said.
Failure in Ecuador
The legislator added, “the textbooks that we have been able to analyze include topics such as reproductive rights and integral education. It is a replica of programs that other countries have implemented, and we are certain they have failed.”
Mendez Alvarez evoked the example of Ecuador to demonstrate the failure of the incorporation of these reforms in the education system. She asserts that the average age of first sexual activity fell from 17 years to 14 in Ecuador as a result of the introduction of books supporting the gender ideology.

“With this educational reform, children from the age of 11 will be imparted workshops to experiment with their bodies, inciting them to have sexual relations at a very young age with partners of the same or opposite sex. They will also include games, activities, and literature that promotes physical exploration between partners even when the children do not want to participate and without the knowledge of the parents, without respecting the intimate and private lives of children,” insisted the legislator.
Further, she stresses that public education should not be in favor of any ideology. The contents should impart an integral vision of people. Knowledge should be based on scientific criteria. It should not succumb to the pressure of movements that don’t understand the genetic, biological, and psychological reality of sexuality.
The gender ideology, known as gender perspective in feminist and progressive circles, proposes a dynamic between the sexes detached from biology and more attached to social constructivism. They want to break down the men and women binary and open up several categories that they classify as gender.
Sex education, not eroticization
In contrast, the parents’ associations, along with the representative, as mentioned earlier, insist that they are not against education, but its ideological indoctrination.
“We want sex education without the imposition of any ideology. Sex education should not include eroticization. It should prevent not promote the early development of the sexual activity. It should prevent the sexual abuse of children, unwanted pregnancies, the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, violence, and more things that hurt society,” they said at the press conference.
The parents added that no ideology should hijack public schools. Sex education should be based on scientific criteria.
Demanding respect for parental authority
Additionally, this issue highlights the legal and even constitutional gravity of the situation whereby Congress has more control than the parents in decisions regarding the education of their children.
The legislator, on behalf of the parents, said, “We demand respect for parental authority. We cannot allow the state to rob parents of their right to educate their children. Parents demand that the stages of learning are respected without abusing the innocence of children. Families participate directly in the education of their children. They exercise the responsibility to bring up their children according to their sexuality.”
The president of the Family Commission, representative Elza Mendez reiterates that it was a mistake to pass the Education law without consulting the parents on topics such as sexuality, which are very important for them.
The disconnect between the three dimensions of sexuality: biological, psychological, and social
Finally, the participants of the “don’t mess with my children” campaign claimed that educational reform disconnects the three dimensions of sexuality: biological, psychological, and social.
Therefore, it is not supported by the science but back by ideology. The parents’ associations see that as indoctrination, not education.
