EspañolThe Cuban government continues to prevent journalists Sol García Basulto and Henry Constantin Ferreiro from leaving the island this week.

Both work as reporters for the independent magazine La Hora de Cuba. They were invited to the Regional Youth and Democracy Forum in Mexico, but won’t be able to attend due to “usurpation of legal capacity” accusations levied against them.

“That reality forces us to stay on the island. But we will try, we will not sit still,” Constantin said, “and we do not know if they will fulfill the threats they made against on months ago.”

Constantin was referring to the initial accusations made against them by the Cuban government that they were practicing journalism without proper certification. The Inter-American Press Association said it considers the accusations against the two journalists contrary to international provisions that support the right to seek, receive and disseminate information and to express opinions.

Yet García and Constantin continued to be under constant surveillance, they said, waiting for a police investigator “who follows the case” to bring it to a close. According to the reporters, Cuba establishes that a defense lawyer must have access to the case within 20 days, but there has still been no response.

“They are useful, productive events, full of experiences,” Constantin said of the event they are missing out on. “Surely State Security will do everything they can to make sure we do not attend.”
