Only five months into the year, and 16,455 Cuban residents from the US have traveled to the island, which is a 45-percent increase compared to last year’s 114,391.

This information was released by Cabañas alongside Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs Josefina Vidal in expectation of President Donald Trump’s announcement about policy-changes to relations with Cuba, which have reportedly been under review.

Sources close to the review have said Trump could reinstate many of the stricter policies of embargo-era Cuban relations that were removed by former President Barack Obama. However, no details about it have been officially announced. During the presidential campaign, Trump said on various occasions that he would reverse Obama’s policies.

“I am 1,000-percent sure that the president will fulfill his commitment,” Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart said. “I have no doubt that we will soon see a different policy.”
