EspañolPeru President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said the situation in Venezuela “is the number one issue in the Americas” at the moment.
“We consider the support of countries in the Americas fundamental for Venezuela and the welfare of its people,” Kuczynski said after a meeting with Venezuelan National Assembly Speaker Julio Borges. “There should be humanitarian, psychological and democratic aid.”
“We will be present at each debate in an effort to seek a peaceful solution to these problems,” he added.
Kuczynski said Peru will make an effort to work with other countries that are also willing to collaborate on the Venezuelan crisis.
Borges reiterated in the meeting that Venezuela needs the help of countries that have historically been its ally.
“We need the determined help of Venezuela’s allies to add to the pressure that we are applying within Venezuela, together with international solidarity, to push those who have power in Venezuela to be open to a democratic solution,” he said. “What we need in Venezuela is peace achieved through elections.”
President Nicolás Maduro’s administration refuses to listen to the legitimate right of the Venezuelan people to have elections, he said.

“The situation is so serious and violent that the government is practically leading the country into a civil war,” Borges added.
“We have been protesting on the streets for more than 40 days, demanding the fulfillment of our country’s constitution so that we can have free elections, the freedom of our political prisoners, respect for the Parliament that was elected by 14 million Venezuelans and the opening of a humanitarian channel that allows medicine and food to reach a country in which Venezuelans go out in search of garbage dumps for food.”
