EspañolBolivian President Evo Morales accused Organization of American States Secretary General Luis Almagro of supporting a coup in Venezuela.
Almagro has been the central voice in the push to impose a Democratic Charter on Venezuela for not restoring its constitution and releasing political prisoners.
According to the Bolivian President, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is under attack from a coup d’état attempt backed by Almagro and various OAS member countries.
“Nicolás Maduro was elected and voted president and a coup d’état is being carried out by Venezuelan right-wing opposition, with the support of Secretary Luis Almagro, some OAS countries as well as the United States,” Morales said in an interview on Wednesday, April 26.
Morales has criticized Almagro on several occasions, once having called him a “threat to peace.” This time around, he said that Almagro is promoting violence and confrontation in Venezuela in hopes of justifying a military intervention by the United States.
According to Morales, Almagro “is destroying the OAS by being submissive to the United States’ imperialist interventionist policies.”
“The OAS is forgetting its interventionist tradition. With what authority can Secretary General Luis Almagro speak of democracy if he participates in a coup d’état?” Morales asked.

To add to the evidence of a coup, Morales said that an institutional takeover is being carried out in the OAS itself, because a meeting was held to discuss Venezuela despite the fact that Bolivia, who served as chair to the Permanent Council, had suspended the session.
