In writing my article on the United Nations’ survey event here in Florida, I sought out a critic’s perspective, and one need look no further than the John Birch Society. Publisher of The New American magazine, JBS has opposed centralized, world government since its founding in 1958.
I could not include their full response in the news article, so I’m publishing it here. From Bill Hahn, public relations and marketing manager:
The United Nations has demonstrated time and again that it does not respect the sovereignty of the United States, nor of any nation. The fundamental flaw is that through all of its conventions, charters, treaties, and other publications the UN believes that it can grant rights to citizens through government. This is quite the opposite of what the American founders believed. The founders stated in the Declaration of Independence that “all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights . . . that to secure these rights, governments are instituted . . .” America’s founders believed and wrote into the Constitution unalienable rights that government is supposed to protect, not legislate away. However, the UN writes in its Universal Declaration of Human Rights that liberty and rights can be deprived by laws.
We conclude that the governmental systems created by the U.S. and the UN cannot exist side-by-side. One will eventually triumph and the other will completely disappear. Contrasting the founding documents of our nation and those of the UN provides reason enough for the US to withdraw from the UN. It’s an entangling alliance that should be avoided. We have been opposed to America’s UN membership since our organization’s beginning in 1958, and we will continue educating others to build the ever-growing basis of support to get the U.S. out of the UN.
