EspañolIt seems that Mexico and the United States won’t commence trade negotiations anytime soon, as President Enrique Peña Nieto said he has yet to approach the team of US president-elect Donald Trump.

“There is absolutely no appointment by anyone at this time to assume the task of representing the government,” Nieto said on Wednesday, November 23, but added that such an appointment will be forthcoming once Trump’s administration more clearly defines its policy goals. He further noted that the two nations have always had good geopolitical relations.
The president’s statement comes after Mexican media reported that Peña Nieto had already named named Luis Videgaray, former finance minister, as the Mexican government’s representative to Trump’s transition team, but it looks as if he won’t be using him just yet.
Videgaray was the official responsible for bringing Trump to Mexico during the campaign, a controversial visit that ultimately cost Videgaray his job.
Peña Nieto’s comments suggest that Mexico will be standing by for some time until work with its northern trade partner begin.
“I have pointed out time and again that we will have to dialogue the best way that we can with the new US government,” Nieto said, “with the aim of establishing a new agenda in our bilateral relationship that addresses the issues pertinent to both governments, within a framework of absolute respect for our sovereign nations, and a willingness to work together constructively.”
