EspañolMexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto said that US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s controversial statements hurt bilateral relations between the two countries.

“I think they hurt a relationship that Mexico has sought with the US , which is one of bridges, dialogue, and seeking solutions to common problem through agreements and shared tasks,” said the president in an interview with El Universal, a Mexican daily.

The Mexican president said the Republican candidate “doesn’t really know the important contribution of millions of Mexicans who have decided to seek or find a life of opportunity and fulfillment in another country, as is in the case of the United States.”

He added: “Of course we do not agree, and on the contrary, I am among those who regret and condemn such expressions, which I think are clearly a misunderstanding of Mexico. Anyone who speaks ill of Mexico is because he doesn’t know Mexico. Anyone who defames the Mexican people doesn’t know Mexicans. ”

He also defended his country’s economic performance and denied that his government is mismanaging public finances. He boasted that his administration’s reforms have helped stabilize the country. “In terms of the economy,” Peña Nieto said, “our energy, telecommunications and financial reforms are showing their effects. The same applies to the tax reform, controversial as it has been.”

And it is undeniable that what we’re talking about is a highly dangerous criminal with a very marked history of crimes committed and who will face legal proceedings (in Mexico) and (in the United States). ”

Finally, he absolved his government of any responsibility in the massacre of students at Ayotzinapa: “Honestly, I have a very clear position on this issue. I believe that we cannot even point to or try to blame the federal government for having anything to do with this very unfortunate matter. We all regret what happened there.”
