Russia, Also Involved in the Cuban “Sonic” Attack? Putin Say It’s Absurd

EspañolVladimir Putin’s administration said any attempt to link Russia to the alleged “sonic” attacks in Havana, Cuba is “absolutely absurd.” Kremlin spokeswoman Maria Zajárova said they had nothing to do with the mysterious incident, which resulted in hearing loss and caused brain damage to US and Canadian diplomats earlier this year.

“With regard to attempts to see a certain interest or direct or indirect participation of our country in this matter, it is certainly absolutely absurd,” Zajárova said. “It is grotesque and may provoke laughter, but on the other hand, it is yet another reason to keep Russian-American relations as less than friendly. ”

According to Zajárova, Moscow “has not participated in any way in acoustic, sonic or, as some write, musical attacks against American diplomats in Havana.”

Both the FBI and Cuban authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the alleged sonic attacks, which reportedly took place late 2016.

The little information that Washington has revealed suggests that an electronic device was the cause of the hearing damage and that those affected could suffer serious brain damage as well.

CNN reported that more than 10 people were affected by the attack, including some family members of US diplomats, and five Canadians. Two of those diplomats were reported to have “suffered long-term damage, including hearing loss as a result of the attacks, and were unable to return to Cuba.”

US officials decided to expel two diplomats from the Cuban embassy in Washington, D.C. last May after determining that Havana did not adequately comply with its obligation to protect US personnel on the island.
