EspañolNicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and his adminstration have granted political asylum to former President of El Salvador Mauricio Funes, who served in office between 2009 and 2014.
Funes made the request for his wife and three children as well.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua reportedly granted him political asylum under the belief that Funes was in danger.
“His life and physical integrity and that of his family (were in danger)” said a Ministry of Affairs announcement, “as a result of their struggle for democracy, peace, justice and human rights and political affiliation in the Republic of El Salvador.”
The granting of political asylum was announced by the official newspaper of Nicaragua, The Gazette. The Secretary of Communications of the Presidency of El Salvador Eugenio Chicas tweeted the news.

We have found out through the Official Gazette of Nicaragua that former president Funes was granted asylum in Nicaragua.
The Constitutional Chamber of El Salvador ordered that the official trips taken by Funes be revealed in September. It also ordered him to release the costs of design, production and implementation of the 2010 campaign, as well as expenses on ceremonial activities on the visits by foreign officials.

El Salvador is investigating the former president for five offenses that were committed during his 2009-2014 term, including embezzlement, illicit enrichment, deviation of funds, illicit negotiations and influence peddling.
